>WORK OBJECTIVES:
>In 2008 the Montpelier Foundation completed a state-of-the-art restoration of the mansion of James and Dolley Madison on their historic plantation in Orange, Virginia. The focus is now on refurnishing the newly restored mansion through intensive research documenting their lives and the possessions they owned.
>
>The Research Assistant will work as a member of the Curatorial Department, with emphasis on conducting research and analyzing the provenance of furniture, ceramics, metals, and a range of other objects purported to have belonged to James and Dolley Madison. The position is grant funded for 12-18 months and is contingent upon receipt of grant
> funding. Benefits package available. We are seeking a highly motivated individual with an undergraduate degree in history, art history, museum studies, American Studies, or other related field who is able to work independently and brings a background in American history with a general knowledge of 18th- and 19th-century decorative arts to the position. The successful candidate will have research skills in the decorative arts and experience doing research in archives, courthouses and other repositories. Applicant must have strong communication and writing skills. Experience with computer databases is preferred.

>DUTIES:

>The Research Assistant will work as a member of a team conducting the following duties:

>- Work in a support role processing documents and files relating to purported Madison objects in the curatorial research files
>
>- Assist in identifying, organizing, and recording information on the documents that are in or
> will be added to Montpeliers curatorial research files
>
>- Transcribe and edit manuscripts in Microsoft Word
>
>- Index documents using Montpeliers keyword nomenclature
>
>- Create and edit records on objects and related source documents in FileMaker Pro
>
>- Enter information and images on Madison-related objects and documents into a relational research database (FileMaker Pro)
>
>- Photograph objects and documents
>
>-Search for records and published sources pertaining to suspected Madison-owned objects. May involve on-line research and at various repositories, such as libraries, historical societies, courthouses, etc. Local and overnight travel will be required.
>
>-Visit individuals and institutions who own purported Madison objects to record the object and its provenance
>
>-Produce reports of research findings in a timely manner when required.
>
>-Other duties as assigned.

>QUALIFICATIONS:

>? Preferred: Filemaker Pro or other relational databases
>? Strong research skills and experience doing research in archives, courthouses and other repositories.

>? Ability to work in a team environment
>? Ability to maintain accurate records and to make connections between disparate data; good organizational skills and attention to detail
>? Excellent visual recall
>? Good verbal and written skills
>? Valid drivers license
>? Ability to lift and move items weighing up to 30 pounds
